Introduction

This essay explores the foundational principles of Advaita Vedanta (No-duality), presenting Self-realization as the highest and ultimate purpose of human existence.

It examines the essential principles related to practice, inner transformation, and liberation. Among them, it clarifies the nature of ignorance, the true Self, and the important aspects of practice, awakening, and Self-realization, so that one may have a clear map of the inner journey leading to Self-realization.

Quick Reference

  • Purpose of life — To realise the true Self (Atman/Consciousness); all other aims are secondary
  • Ignorance — The ego’s false identification with body and mind; the root cause of suffering and separation
  • The true Self — Eternal, formless, all-pervading Consciousness; the silent presence within every being
  • Path to liberation — Sadhana (spiritual practice): purification of mind, cultivation of sattvic qualities, dissolution of the ego, and meditation/Self-enquiry
  • Awakening vs. liberation — Awakening is the initial recognition of one’s true nature; liberation is its complete and permanent establishment through full dissolution of the ego
  • Prerequisites — Intense longing for truth, discernment (Viveka), dispassion (Vairagya), and the six virtues (Shad Sampat)
  • Satsang — Company of the Self-realised as a powerful purifying force on the path
  • The role of grace — Awakening happens spontaneously by God’s grace, not by will alone; practice prepares the ground but cannot force it
  • Discernment & dispassion — Seeing through the emptiness of sense pleasures leads to non-attachment, which steadies the mind for deep meditation and Samadhi
  • The main aspects of Sadhana — Mind purification, cultivation of virtues, ego dissolution, disidentification and development of Self-awareness through Self-enquiry and meditation — all advance together
  • Sattvic lifestyle — Reducing rajas and tamas through daily practice and sattvic lifestyle is essential; sattva is the foundation of both well-being, inner growth and Self-realisation
  • Liberation is not for the ego — It is freedom from the ego; its complete death in all aspects (defects, flaws, desires, emotions, patterns, illusion, attachments, etc.) is the birth into eternal life
  • Key warning — Spirituality can become an ego game; constant vigilance is essential
  • The final call — Self-realisation is every being’s birthright; sincere, diligent, and sustained practice leads inevitably to freedom

What is the main purpose of life?

Our main purpose as human beings is to realize our true Self or Atman. All the other purposes take a secondary place in our life.

The purpose of life is to realise the oneness qof all creation and one’s identity with the Divinity. True life is life in God. The goal of life is God-realisation.
~ Swami Sivananda

Self-realisation, God-realisation, Liberation, Enlightenment are synonymous terms. These terms mean the realisation of our true Self whose nature is pure Consciousness, the end of suffering and the spontaneous experience of unalloyed peace, bliss and plenitude.

Awakening into our true nature is not Self-realisation. Self-realisation occurs when the ego dissolves totally and the mind becomes as pure and luminous as Consciousness itself.

Perfection is attained when the intellect becomes as pure as the Atman itself!
