The fundamental goals of spiritual practice
by Atman Nityananda

In summary, the fundamental goals of the practice in relation to our lower self and our true Self are:

  1. to develop the capacity to be in conscious contact moment by moment with the silent presence within (self-awareness) that is our true Self,,
  2. the cessation of all identification with our apparent self (identification with the body, thoughts, feelings, desires, desires, opinions, etc.) and with sensory experiences, objects, persons and situations,
  3. the purification of the mind,
  4. the elimination of rajas and tamas qualities from the mind and the increase of sattva quality so that the mind becomes completely sattvic,
  5. the elimination of egoic tendencies, desires, attachments, negative emotions, programming, etc,
  6. the development of the virtues and sattvic abilities of the mind,
  7. the inquiry into beliefs, the abandonment of false beliefs and their replacement with beliefs in harmony with the truth,
  8. the discerment between our true Self, our eternal, unchanging, unchanging, formless, unborn, untrue Being (Consciousness, Atman, Soul, Spirit) and our apparent or lower self (body, prana, mind in all its aspects, causal body),
  9. deepening in the awareness of our divine nature (Consciousness), awakening and establishing ourselves in our true nature (self-realization, liberation).

These goals are achieved through disciplines and the application of a variety of practices and methods within a well-organized program of practice which we follow daily with constancy, zeal and sincerity while maintaining a well-organized sattvic lifestyle.

Deepening in the awareness of our divine nature (Consciousness), awakening and establishing ourselves in our true nature (self-realization, liberation) is the goal og human life.
