Experiences and Egoic Tendencies
by Atman Nityananda / postgr
Life experiences show us how much we have progressed in our ability to face and manage our defects and emotions, both at the moment they arise and after the incident, through deeper introspection, understanding, and elimination of them.
Experiences also allow us to see how much we have progressed so far in eliminating various egoic tendencies and their branches, such as pride, selfishness, anger, lust, greed, judgment, gluttony, etc. We can, for example, observe how much our anger, fear, or anxiety has decreased in certain specific incidents or in similar ones.
When a particular defect or emotion arises, such as anger, we have the opportunity to see again and perceive even more clearly how it functions within us, how it connects with our thoughts, beliefs, and the environment we are in, and also to notice the development of our ability to manage it.
It is also important, in each incident, to examine not only the main manifestation (for example, anger) but to look more broadly at the issue and recognize what it is related to and what its deeper causes are, in relation to the specific event — such as, for example, the possible connection of anger with pride, fear, the need to be spoken to politely, etc. And also, to go deeper into these, as we do with the main expression of the incident, in order to understand and eliminate them through prayer, visualizations, and other methods.
Self-knowledge, therefore, is exactly taking each experience and going deeper — both with respect to the specific defect or emotion that manifested at that moment, and with respect to the other tendencies connected to it, so that we can work on them and free ourselves from them as well.
This work is carried out more or less effectively, according to the progress we have made so far and the development of all the elements and abilities that help us in this.
The work of recognizing, becoming aware of, understanding, and eliminating egoic tendencies proceeds gradually, depending on how sincerely and systematically we practice it, according to how much we progress in contact with our true nature (the silent, living presence of Consciousness) the purification of the mind and the development of the higher sattvic capacities of the mind and the heart
