Experiences and egoic tendencies

Life experiences show us how far we have progressed in our ability to address and manage our defects and emotions — both at the moment they arise and afterward — through deeper introspection, understanding, and the elimination of these tendencies.

They also allow us to observe how much we have advanced in eliminating various egoic tendencies and their offshoots, such as pride, egotism, anger, criticism, gluttony, and so on. For instance, we may notice how much our anger, fear, or anxiety has diminished in specific incidents or similar situations.

When a particular defect or emotion arises — such as anger — we have the opportunity to observe it again and gain deeper awareness and understanding of how it functions within us: how it connects with our thoughts, beliefs, and the environment we are in, and how we are developing the capacity to manage it.

It is also important, in each incident, not only to examine the main expression (e.g. anger), but to view the situation more holistically and recognize what it is related to and what deeper causes lie behind it — such as a possible connection between anger and pride, fear, or the need to be spoken to politely. We must also go deeper into these related tendencies, just as we do with the main expression, in order to cultivate deeper awareness and understanding, and to eliminate them through prayer, visualization, and other methods like EFT.

Self-knowledge, then, is precisely the act of taking each experience and going deeper — both into the specific defect or emotion that manifested in that moment and into the related tendencies — so that we can work on them and free ourselves from them as well.

This work progresses more or less effectively depending on how far we have come and on the development of the qualities and capacities that support this process.

The work of recognizing, becoming aware of, understanding, and eliminating egoic tendencies advances gradually, in proportion to how sincerely and consistently we practice it — according to how deeply we connect with our true nature, the silent and living presence of Consciousness; the purity of mind we have achieved so far; and the development of the higher faculties of both mind and heart.

Repeat God’s name constantly

“The water to purify your heart is the name of God.” “Of utmost importance is to increase the repetition of God’s Name (japa) daily. In this way, your heart and mind will be purified, and only then will you find (realize) God within you.”
~ Haidakhan Babaji
