Mechanical Unconscious Living
by Atman Nityananda / blog

What people call “my life” is merely a series of mechanical, compulsive, habitual reactions—sensational, emotional, and mental—to what they perceive through the five senses.

The majority of earthlings live more like robots than true human beings, lacking inner harmony and awakening to their true nature.

Although they act under the influence of the subconscious mind’s programming and conditioning, they believe they live consciously and that their actions are the result of free will. However, they cannot perceive or understand their predicament due to the predominance of the tamas and rajas gunas in their minds.

Tamas veils their true nature, obscuring discernment, pure reason, understanding, and clear perception. Rajas, on the other hand, extroverts, distracts, and agitates the mind, causing dissatisfaction, discontentment, and cravings for sensory pleasures, power, money, fame, and possessions.

As a result, they become identified with and lost in a ceaseless mental and emotional turmoil, which only temporarily subsides when a desire or need is fulfilled.

As long as the majority of humans remain in this state of consciousness, any essential change or real progress in our world remains nearly impossible.

Moreover, we must face the consequences of our mechanical, unconscious behavior, which exploits and harms all forms of life on Earth.

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
