The Tyrant and Triptych of Misery
by Atman Nityananda

The lower thinking mind, the lower emotional-desiring mind, and the lower intellect form the three servants of misery and suffering, with the ego as their tyrant master.

A person’s misery comes from identifying with desires, emotions, and the thoughts of the lower mind and ego, mistaking them for reality.

These identifications are caused by the lower rajaso-tamasic ego, which acts like a psychological virus that infects the mind. This virus manifests through defects, passions, selfish desires, mental and emotional patterns, and habits that shape thoughts, decisions, and behavior.

Under the influence of the lower ego, the mind blindly and compulsively repeats whatever has accumulated in the subconscious from past experiences, based on its likes and dislikes, desires for pleasure, fame, name, comfort, and money, without understanding the nature of things.

The mind and intellect can become good servants when trained and placed under the guidance of the refined intellect or intelligence (Buddhi in Sanskrit).

However, when left unchecked and influenced by the lower ego and its emotional-desiring tendencies, they become tyrants and the cause of our suffering.

The worst part is that we do not realize we are identified with the lower mind, lower intellect, and ego. We believe we live consciously and make conscious choices, but in reality, we are merely reacting mechanically, based on our conditioning

My Book in English

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
