🔶 The S.C.A.I.P.E. Method (in Brief)
🔶 Managing Emotions Moment to Moment – The S.C.A.I.P.E. Method (in Brief)
by Atman Nityananda
The management and liberation of lower emotions andegoic tendencies is a central aspect of inner transformation and spiritual growth. Our mind and psyche are deeply conditioned and dominated by lower emotions and egoic tendencies of all kinds, rooted in ignorance, desire, and identification.
The inner work involves addressing emotions and egoic tendencies both in real-time, as they arise, and through dedicated practice at home using various methods and tools.
I present here a brief overview of a comprehensive method I call S.C.A.I.P.E., designed for managing emotions, and all other tendencies, in the moment, each time they appear.
It is important to understand that effectively using this method requires the development of certain capacities of the mind and heart, such as attentiveness, acceptance, discernment, devotion, and detachment. It also requires the regular practice of meditation, self-inquiry, and other disciplines that foster purification, Self-awareness, attentiveness, concentration, clarity, and discrimination.
Introduction
This method is a complete formula that helps us:
- Live consciously moment by moment, in contact with the silent presence of our divine nature (self-awareness)
- Remain as witnesses of ourselves, consciously observing whatever arises in our psychological world
- Avoid or interrupt identification with limiting psychological programs, habits, egoic tendencies and patterns (such as negative emotions, impulses, limiting thoughts, etc.)
- Manage all psychological states systematically and effectively
- Gradually weaken all limitations, habits, tendencies, and identifications more and more
- Maintain conscious connection with the inner silence, peace, freedom, and fullness of Being.
S.C.A.I.P.E. is a complete method for living consciously in the present moment and becoming free from the limitations of the mind and the ego.
The method includes a series of simple techniques that allow us to come into contact with the inner silence of Being—or to deepen that contact—consciously manage emotions and egoic tendencies (psychological programs and patterns, impulses, limiting thoughts, etc.), avoid or interrupt identification with them, allow them to subside, and gradually weaken them. Ultimately, it helps us maintain conscious connection with the inner silence, peace, freedom, and fullness of Being.
We can use the process and tools proposed by the S.C.A.I.P.E. method whenever a pattern, impulse, tendency, or emotion arises within us, pulls our attention compulsively, causes us to identify with it, seduces us, hooks itself inside us, and won’t go away.
The S.C.A.I.P.E. method becomes increasingly effective as our level of self-awareness and other sattvic abilities (discernment, attention, mental clarity, detachment, etc.) grow, and as we become more skilled in applying the various techniques the method includes.
As these develop, we become more and more capable of maintaining conscious awareness of the inner silent presence of Being, and of observing—consciously and as neutral witnesses—what takes place within our psychological world.
We also increasingly reduce identification with whatever arises within us, we recognize earlier (depending on our abilities and the circumstances) the arising of thoughts, emotions, and egoic tendencies, we avoid identifying with them or stop the identification more easily if it has already occurred, and we manage them more effectively.
I also want to emphasize that there is flexibility in how you apply the steps of this method. While the steps follow a natural and helpful sequence for managing emotions or tendencies, you are encouraged to adapt their application based on your own experience. For example, it may not always be necessary to apply Step 4 (Inquiry) to dismantle the emotion or tendency and diminish the attraction or charm it exerts on you, or to actively facilitate Step 3 (Acceptance), if acceptance has already arisen naturally.
The Inner Work at Home
The inner work with emotions and egoic tendencies involves both addressing them in real-time as they arise, and also at home through daily dedicated practice using various methods and tools for this purpose.
The method presented here refers mostly to the moment-to-moment management of egoic reactions. However, the elements that constitute this practice are also utilized for addressing these tendencies at home.
Home Practice
At home, we benefit from both better external conditions and a more conducive inner state for this deeper introspection and inquiry.
At home we can deepen our introspection and inquiry through which we can:
1. Achieve greater awareness and understanding of our psychological patterns
2. Reach important realizations, such as:
— These are automatic reactions that function without our will and conscious consent
— We are not these reactions, but appear to be them due to identification and lack of awareness and discernment
— We are not them, but rather the witnessing awareness in which they appear and disappear
— They cause as troubles and suffering
— They do not benefit us in a meaningful way
3. Dismantle them systematically
4. Cease our identification with them
5. Eliminate much of their energetic hold through specific practices such as targeted prayers and techniques like EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)
Below are the steps of the
S.C.A.I.P.E. Method, presented in brief
Basic Elements of the Metho
S.C.A.I.P.E.
S – Stop
C – Consciousness, Self-awareness
A – Awareness, Attention, Acceptance
I – Inquiry
P – Pacification
E – Elimination
Steps for Applying the Method
- Abidance in the inner silence, peace, and fullness of Being
- Stop for a moment and withdraw attention inward
- Consciousness: come into contact and deepen into the silent inner space, the silent presence of Being
- Awareness, Attention, Acceptance: full attention and conscious awareness of the reaction
- Acceptance of the situation—both internal and external
- Inquiry: consciously feel and observe with full attention what we are experiencing; investigate (if necessary), or use a method to stop identification and the fascination exerted by the thoughts, emotions, or impulses
- Disidentification: all of the above will bring us to a state of partial or full disidentification from the thoughts, emotions, impulses, etc.
- Peace: subduing of thoughts and emotions (partially or fully), leading to mental and emotional calm
- Elimination of emotional or egoic energy through the power of prayer and mantras
Steps Analysis
1. S: Stop or Pause
Create internal space by disengaging from external distractions. The goal is to momentarily stop everything, shifting your focus inward to prepare for the next steps.
2. C: Connect with Silence (Self-awareness)
Establish inner silence as the foundation. This step involves deepening your connection with your internal stillness and becoming self-aware, providing the mental clarity necessary to manage the emotion.
3. A: Awareness & Acceptance of the Emotion
Observe the emotion without identifying with it. Acknowledge the emotion fully while maintaining a detached awareness. Allow yourself to feel the emotion without becoming absorbed by it.
4. I: Inquiry (as a Complementary Step)
Use inquiry to deepen your awareness and weaken the emotional expression, its power, and the attraction it exerts on you. Ask questions like, “Am I this emotion, or am I the observer of it?” to break the emotional attachment and shift your perspective, weakening its influence on you.
5. P: Pacification (Partial or Complete) of the Emotion
Through the previous steps, the emotion’s grip and power are weakened and allowed to subside.
6. Elimination. This pacification is further supported by the use of mantra and prayer, which diminishes the emotional energy and helps it lose its hold on you.
Epilogue
This method is not merely a tool for managing emotions but a profound process for dissolving all egoistic tendencies—impulses, desires, and conditioned programming of any kind. It is not only a means of liberation from these limitations but also a way of living in constant self-awareness, remaining rooted in the peace, plenitude, and beauty of our divine essence.
Through continuous practice, this approach prevents identification with fleeting tendencies and protects against the forgetfulness of inner peace. It offers a path to living in deeper alignment with our true nature, cultivating harmony within ourselves, with others, and with life itself. It is not just a method; it is a way of being—a transformation at the deepest level.
By applying this process, along with regular practice at home, we gradually dissolve the barriers that separate us from our divine essence. We cultivate a higher state of consciousness, becoming vessels of peace, love, and light—agents of transformation both within ourselves and in the world. In doing so, we fulfill our highest potential: to awaken, to embody the divine, and to radiate that presence into all aspects of life.
Repeat God’s name constantly
“The water to purify your heart is the name of God.” “Of utmost importance is to increase the repetition of God’s Name (japa) daily. In this way, your heart and mind will be purified, and only then will you find (realize) God within you.”
