Our freedom from egoistic tendencies
by Atman Nityananda / fc

To free ourselves from egoistic tendencies, we must first identify and observe them closely. It is essential to gain full awareness of their nature and operation through continuous self-observation and discernment. We need to realize that the same thoughts, emotions, desires, reactions, and behaviors are mechanically repeated under specific conditions and external circumstances. We must also recognize that we are not these tendencies—they are something foreign within us.

Only by observing and becoming fully aware of the constant mechanical repetition of thoughts and emotions can we understand that they operate automatically. These are programs and psychological entities functioning independently of our conscious will, keeping us imprisoned.

Once we realize we are trapped in these patterns, that we are not them, and that they are intrusions in our inner world, we will strongly desire to free ourselves from them. This realization motivates us to work decisively and consistently to eliminate these tendencies from our psyche.

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
