The elimination of desire
by Atman Nityananda /fc

To free ourselves from desires, we must cultivate discernment, detachment, non-identification, dispassion, and love for God, as well as an intense yearning for truth and liberation.

Non-identification and dispassion (indifference to sensory objects) develop gradually, in proportion to our ability to control the mind and senses, enhance discernment, purify the mind, increase the sattvic quality of the mind, meditate effectively, and remain consciously connected with the inner silent presence. Love for God and the thirst for truth and liberation also grow through these practices.

Love for God and the thirst for truth and liberation are nurtured through worship, repetition of God’s name, study of sacred texts (such as the Bhagavad Gita and the New Testament), association with enlightened individuals and devotees, purification of the mind, and by increasing the sattvic quality of the mind.

These qualities are further enhanced by cultivating discernment, practicing in the presence of enlightened beings, and gaining direct contact with the peace, fullness, and bliss that eternally reside within us through meditation and self-inquiry.

Where our heart is, there too is our mind. Naturally, our attention and interest are directed toward what we love.
As our love for God and our thirst for truth and liberation grow, our attachment to worldly successes and pleasures will diminish accordingly.

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
