Can Being Be Aware of Itself Without a Medium?
by Atman Nityananda

Being (Consciousness) is, by nature, self-existent and self-conscious.
But for Being to experience or know itself, it requires a medium — a clear and pure mind.

The human mind serves as a mirror for Being:

Just as we need a mirror to see our own face,

And just as sunlight remains invisible until it reflects off a surface,
So, Consciousness needs the mind to reflect and experience itself.

Mind purification is essential.
Without purification, the mind remains clouded, and Consciousness cannot experience itself clearly.
This is why sages emphasize sadhana, transformation, and illumination of the mind.

If Being were fully aware of itself without a medium,
there would be no need for practice, purification, or transformation.
But the very necessity of these practices proves the essential role of the mind.

Being does not depend on the mind.

The mind is a projection of Being itself, not something separate.

The mind depends on Being, not the other way around.
Thus, mind and Being are not two — they are one, non-dual reality.

As Ramana Maharshi beautifully expressed:

The pure mind is itself Brahman; therefore Brahman is not other than the mind of the sage.”

The Truth Revealed in Deep Sleep:

In deep sleep, there is no awareness of objects, no awareness of Being, and no awareness of non-awareness.

If Consciousness were truly self-aware, without needing any medium,
deep sleep would not present a gap in experience.
But in deep sleep, we find a complete absence of experience, a total absence of awareness.

Thus: The idea that Being is aware of itself simply because it is Consciousness itself cannot hold.

Being is — it exists — but to know itself, it requires its own pure projection — the mind — as a clear medium.

Repeat God’s name constantly

“The water to purify your heart is the name of God.” “Of utmost importance is to increase the repetition of God’s Name (japa) daily. In this way, your heart and mind will be purified, and only then will you find (realize) God within you.”

My Book in English

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
