Desire is the essential nature of the ego

From desire arise all egoistic tendencies or defects.
Desire is the essential nature of the lower ego. The lower ego is, essentially, desire. Desire itself takes the form of greed, selfishness, pride, anger, dissatisfaction, a sense of lack, jealousy, fear, sadness, miserliness, ambition, vanity, lust, gluttony, liking, disliking, impatience, attachment, etc.
For this reason, the elimination of desire holds a central place in the eradication of egoistic tendencies.
The elimination of desire is the foremost and central goal in spiritual practice.
“Desire is the fuel; thought is the fire. The thought-fire is kept up by the desire-fuel.”
“If you withdraw the supply of fuel, the fire will be withdrawn into its womb. If you stop thinking by cutting off desires, the mind will be withdrawn into Brahman (Pure Consciousness).
