Self-awareness and the cessation of identification
by Atman Nityananda / blog gr

To stop identification and remain in self-awareness, we must first learn and understand what identification and self-awareness are, and of course, practice continuously.

To detach from the body and mind, continuous vigilance and alertness are required. Full attention and discernment are necessary.

We need to understand what identification is and how it occurs. We must investigate and fully realize how the ego manages to create identification with the body, thoughts, fantasies, external objects, and emotions.

Finally, we must find ways and methods to avoid falling into identification or to stop it if it has already occurred and return to self-awareness.

The same applies to self-awareness. Through study, guidance that we might receive from a teacher or an advanced student, but primarily through continuous practice, investigative attention, and discernment, we need to recognize who or what our true Self is. Additionally, we must discover ways to remind ourselves to remain in self-awareness (awareness of our Self) and stay in that state for as long as possible.

This work on detachment and self-awareness is not something we learn in a few months and then consider complete. It is an ongoing process of deepening and refinement, culminating in self-realization or enlightenment.

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
