DESIRE, ANGER, FEAR
by Atman Nityananda

Three things fundamentally blind human logic and discernment, leading to foolishness, which is paid for with pain (physical and/or psychological).

All other issues are extensions of these three—desire, anger, and fear.

Even in courts, witnesses are made to swear to tell the truth without fear or passion. This shows that the reasons for withholding the truth or lying are passion and fear.

Fear and passion weaken the human mind and distance it from the truth. The person loses the perception of the truth, discernment, and logic, resulting in disharmony and pain.

Excerpts from the Bhagavad Gita:

Chapter VII, 27: “All beings, deluded by the pairs of opposites born of desire and aversion, are subject to delusion from their birth, O Bharata (Arjuna).”

Chapter II, 62: “When a person thinks about objects, their mind becomes enchanted by them and clings to them. From this attachment arises desire, and from desire (when unfulfilled) arises anger.”
Chapter II, 63: “From anger arises confusion, from confusion the loss of memory, from the loss of memory the loss of reason (the loss of discernment and logic), and from the loss of discernment the person is lost.”

Arjuna said:

Chapter III, 36: “But what drives a person to commit sin, even against their will, O descendant of the Vrishni (Krishna), as if forced by force?”

The Blessed Lord said:

Chapter III, 37: “It is desire, it is anger (desire transforms into anger when unfulfilled), born of the Rajasic quality (guna), the great evil that devours everything. Know that this is the enemy here (in this world).”

Chapter V, 26: “Those who are free from desire and anger, the self-controlled ones who have mastered their thoughts, and who have realized the Self (Atman, Brahman), the Nirvana of Brahman (the peace and bliss of Brahman) are present everywhere.”

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
