The fundamental aspects of moment-to-moment practice
by Atman Nityananda

The fundamental aspects of moment-to-moment practice are:

Attentiveness, Self-awareness,. Self-observation, Acceptance, Non-identification, Inquiry, Pacification, Liberation.

1. Vigilance, Attentiveness
Vigilance, being alert and attentive. To be attentive within ourselves and without.

2. Control of the Mind and Senses
Control of the mind and senses, using a mantra or another means, to prevent them from running unchecked and drawing our attention outward, making us identify with sensory experiences and psychological reactions to them.

3. Self-awareness
Self-awareness (conscious contact with the silent presence), using a mantra or another means. We maintain as much as we can firm and deep contact with inner silence, the silent presence of Being, and consciously live the peace, fullness, and freedom of Being.

4. Self-observation
Witnessing, Self-observation. To remain as Witnesses of psychological states and observe them attentively (self-observation) without negative judgment and without reacting. To see our inner state and reactions as objectively as possible.

5. Acceptance of the Moment
Acceptance of the moment, of whatever is happening in and outside of us at any given moment. To recognize, accept, and become fully aware of egoic tendencies, emotions, and mental programming.

6. Inquiry
To question anything that arises within us as to whether it is our choice or true.

7. Non-identification
Non-identification. To avoid or stop identifying with egoic tendencies, thoughts, feelings, impulses, and sensory impressions.

8. Avoiding Attraction to Egoic Tendencies
To stop attraction, seduction, and identification with egoic tendencies, desires, thoughts, and emotions, using some form of inquiry or another method.

9. Pacification
Pacification (calming) of emotions, impulses, desires, thoughts, and vital energy. We bring the mind back to the sattvic state (calm, relaxed, focused, perceptive, attentive) and maintain it as much as we can. We calm any emotions that arise each time and try to maintain a calm, positive, and bright emotional state.

10. Elimination of Egoic Tendencies
Elimination (reducing the energy) of egoic tendencies of all kinds (desires, attachments, impulses, programming, negative emotions, weaknesses, etc.), mainly through prayer, mantra, and other means.

11. Discrimination of Our True Nature
Discrimination of our true nature from anything belonging to our apparent existence (thoughts, emotions, desires, impulses, physical and energetic reactions, body, and ego).

12. Deepening in the Silence of Being
To remain in touch with and deepen in the silence of Being. This is to be in contact with the peace, freedom, and fullness that we Are!

Living consciously moment to moment is essential for living in peace, freedom, love and plenitude and the awakening of Consciousness!
