Spiritual growth Assessment
by Atman Nityananda

A method of evaluating ourselves in relation to our emotions, egoic tendencies, our ability to manage them, and our level of consciousness.

One way to assess our emotional intelligence, our self-awareness, the development of our abilities, and the level of consciousness we are at is by gaining clear awareness of the following:

  • How much can I stay focused on the present?
  • How much can I experience peace, wholeness, freedom, and love within myself at every moment?
  • How much can I remain centered, in inner silence, and avoid identifying with sensory experiences and psychological reactions?
  • How free am I at any given moment from automatic compulsive thoughts and emotions?
  • How easily do we identify or not identify with thoughts, emotions, tendencies, and sensory experiences?
  • What is the strength of anger (or any other tendency or emotion)?
  • How often and how intensely do these manifest?
  • How clearly can I perceive my ego’s reactions, emotional and mental responses?
  • How easily and clearly can I identify an emotion, tendency or programming that arises in me and distinguish between different emotions and ego tendencies?
  • What is my relationship with these?
  • What is my ability to manage thoughts, emotions and tendencies?
  • How easily can I let them go?
  • How harmoniously can I communicate and relate with others?
  • How emotionally unaffected can I remain by the behavior of others or by what happens to me?
  • How much do I maintain emotional calmness, positivity, and mental peace in relation to the small or big things that happen to me?
  • How free am I from negative emotions and egoistic tendencies of any kind?
  • How much compassion do I feel for others, how much do I care about others, and how concerned am I for the well-being of others (practically)?
  • How much can I forgive others and myself?
  • How much do I accept myself and others, as well as the external circumstances that occur to me at every moment?
  • How easily can I overcome the ego’s resistance to doing things that improve and develop my physical, psychological, and spiritual state?

Some Important Insights

This assessment can be done through continuous self-observation.
A precise assessment requires the ability for clear perception and discernment.
Everyone will do what they can at the level of consciousness they are at.
And through their experience, they will gradually learn to evaluate themselves, their work, and their state of consciousness more objectively and accurately.

All the aspects mentioned for self-assessment are also simultaneously development goals.

The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
