The Relationship Between Desire, Fear, and Anger
by Atman Nityananda / blog
Lower emotions, with anger and fear being foremost, stem from a single cause: desire.
Some say that anger arises from fear. In a secondary sense, this is true. Because behind fear, there is always some desire or need (which is also a form of wanting, thus a desire), the root cause is always desiring something, a “want” or a “don’t want.”
Fear and anger also stem from attachments; however, attachment is also based on desire. We are attached to what we want, and not to what we don’t want.
Anger and fear are twin children, firstborn of desire.
“From desire arises suffering. From desire arises fear.
For one who is free from desire, there is neither suffering nor fear.”
~ Buddha
“Those who are free from desire and anger, self-disciplined, who have mastered their thoughts and realized the Self (Atman, Consciousness), experience the all-pervading peace and bliss of God (Nirvana of Brahman).”
~ Bhagavad Gita
The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
