Three main modes of expression of desire
by Atman Nityananda

Dissatisfaction and lack mode of desire

One of the most important expressions of desire (especially in the form of lust for sensory pleasures) is to make us feel discomfort, dissatisfaction and a sense of lack (that we lack something to feel good) and also the compulsion to free ourselves from these states of discomfort, lack and dissatisfaction through some ephemeral sensory micro-pleasure (sex, porn, food, drink, coffee, cell phone, cinema, etc.) or a pleasurable experience. What is called seeking a pleasurable distraction to alleviate that emotional pain that is almost always present in us.

I would like to point out again that the above states are something that desire itself creates almost constantly, especially when we are not engaged in some important task, to force us to seek some pleasant or pleasurable experience. At the same time, desire deceives us by making us believe that the best option to save us from these states of lack, discomfort and dissatisfaction is to seek some pleasure, however small it may be. That is, it makes us believe that pleasure is the solution to cure our state of discomfort and dissatisfaction.

Most of humans have no idea that this is nothing more than a mechanism of desire itself through which it dominates us, deceives us and makes us constantly seek some kind of pleasure so that the ego itself, in the form of lust, satisfies its unquenchable thirst for pleasure.

And all this makes us continue to identify ourselves with the physical body, the mind and the lower ego which is essentially desire for sensory experiences.

Two other main modes of expression of desire

Two other main modes of expression of desire, especially in the form of lust for sense pleasure and pleasurable experiences are:

Seductive mode of desire

On the one hand, the ego tries to seduce us, to charm us, to lure us, so that we yield to our desire and satisfy it; if this does not work, then it takes the form of pressure.

Pressure mode of desire

On the other hand, if it fails to get us to satisfy the desire through identification and seduction, the ego exerts excessive pressure, making us experience an unbearable unpleasant condition in order to make us suffer, so that we yield to the desire and satisfy it.

In short, the ego alternately assumes the pleasurable and the painful state in order to tire us out so that we give in and satisfy the desire.

All the micro-addictions or small addictions we have with small things have as their foundation desire in the form of lust for sense pleasures and are provoked and sustained by the above mentioned mechanisms of desire.
