The identification that the ego creates with the body and mind
by Atman Nityananda / bkes
The ego is composed of psychic vital energy and creates the sense of identity in relation to the body. That is, it creates the sense that ‘the body is me’ or more simply ‘I am the body’. I am identified with the body means that I perceive the body as myself, that ‘the body is me, my identity’. Thus, although in reality what we are is the formless, timeless and spaceless Consciousness (the silent and peaceful inner space) that is beyond the body and the mind (and the ego), because of that identification with the body created by the ego, we perceive and consider the body as our self.
But the ego also causes us to identify with the mind (all its aspects) and because of that identification we perceive the characteristics and functions of the mind as ourselves or as part of ourselves.
For example, because of the identification with the idea of ‘I am Carmen’ (Joan, Maria, etc.) which is only a mental creation, we assume and believe that we are Carmen and because of the identification with the body, this ‘I am Carmen’ refers to the body. Because of the identification with anger, which is only an expression of the vital-emotional ego, we believe that we are angry and we say ‘I am angry’, that is, we identify our Self with anger, when our Self is the Consciousness which is pure light and is always free, peaceful, full and blissful.
The ego also causes us to identify with the mind (all its aspects) and because of that identification we perceive the characteristics and functions of the mind as ourselves or as part of ourselves.
