The sense ‘I Am’ or ‘I Exist’.

The divine Self is absolute Existence and Consciousness and when reflected in the sattvic mind is experienced as the sense ‘I am’ or ‘I exist’.
The ‘I Am’ is a mixture of Consciousness reflected in the sattvic mind and ego and is therefore partly illusory and partly true; illusory because of the ego and mind and true because of Consciousness.
Being aware of this sense of ‘I Am’ is also self-awareness and it is essential to connect with the silence, to stop identifying with the mind (thoughts, emotions, impulses, etc.) and everything else that is not the Self (Silent space of Consciousness).
However, due to ignorance and the rajasotamasic ego, we identify the ‘I Am or I Exist’ with the body and the mind. That is why when we say ‘I Am’, we refer to the body and not to Consciousness.
Because of this identification of ‘I Am’ with the body, we are bound in the realm of material existence and subjected to the perpetual circle of pleasure and pain, births and deaths (Samsara).
On the contrary, by identifying the ‘I Am’ with Consciousness (inner silence), we become witnesses to the body, psychological expressions and sensory experiences, and set ourselves on the path of liberation.
By remaining aware of the ‘I Am’ and the inner silence, we cease to identify with and be dominated by egoic tendencies and mental and emotional programming. We experience inner peace, fulfillment and awaken to our true Self, the silent presence of Consciousness, ever present, free, whole, peaceful and blissful.
