Elimination of Egoic Tendencies and Self-realization
by Atman Nityananda /bkes
The central factor that prevents us from experiencing the peace, fullness and bliss of our true nature and attaining self-realization (enlightenment, liberation) is the rajasotamasic lower ego.
The lower ego in all its expressions ( lust, pride, gluttony, lasciviousness, anger, fear, envy, greed, ambition) as well as the identifications and attachments (with the body, mind, sense objects, people and situations) that are created by the ego itself prevent us from living in harmony (inside and outside) and conscious union with our divine Self (Consciousness, Atman).
Eliminating egoistic tendencies and impurities of the mind is the most important practice.
~ Swami Sivananda
Therefore, the main objective of spiritual practice is to get rid of identifications, to free our mind (psyche) from attachments and desires (which are the cause of attachments) and from all egoistic tendencies.
The means to achieve this is a sattvic and well-organized life and practice. Practice comprises the daily program we do at home (morning and evening) and moment-to-moment practice throughout the day.
The ‘secret’ to a plentiful life, a life of harmony, happiness and contentment is to have a sattvic mind free from desires and ego and to live in every moment in conscious contact with our true Self (Consciousness).
