In my experience, the repetition of a mantra is the most effective practice for remaining mindful and aware of ourselves (self-awareness). Constant repetition of the mantra is one of the most effective ways to remain attentive or mindful (vigilant, alert) moment to moment, keep the mind focused on the silence of the divine essence within us (self-awareness), purify the mind and heart and eliminate selfish tendencies.
In summary, the constant and diligent repetition of a mantra is a multifaceted practice with profound effects on mental, emotional and spiritual development and transformation.
Main benefits of mantra repetition
The practice of repeating a mantra involves the continuous and rhythmic recitation of a phrase. This action benefits us in several ways.
1. Remain alert and present moment by moment:
The focused repetition of a mantra acts as a mental anchor, redirecting attention away from the mental chatter and distractions that often clutter the mind.
By focusing on the mantra, we divert our attention away from distractions and worries, which promotes a heightened state of awareness.
2. Maintaining and developing Self-awareness. Keeping the mind focused on the Divine Consciousness within (Self-awareness):
The mantra serves as a focal point, directing the mind’s attention inward. This inward focus aims to connect with the divine essence that dwells within.
Repeating the mantra regularly fosters Self-awareness (awareness of the silence within) and also awareness of the inner psychological world.
Systematic and diligent repetition of the mantra fosters self-awareness and also the ability to be aware of the psychological world, i.e. all our psychological (mental and emotional) tendencies, patterns and programs, such as feelings, thoughts, emotions, impulses, passions, desires and beliefs.
3. Clarity, serenity, focus:
The repetition of the mantra creates a state of mental calmness and clarity where thoughts become more organized and the mind attains a sense of focus and sharpness, clarity, and clarity.
4. Purifies the vital energy, mind and heart:
Purify the vital energy, the mind (thinking and emotional), the intellect and the subconscious mind. It cleanses them of impurities, negative thoughts and energies, and rajas and tamas qualities.
The continuous repetition of the mantra purifies the energetic field and the mind at all levels (the external mind which is the sensory, thinking and emotional mind, the intermediate mind or intellect and the internal or subconscious mind). It purifies all aspects or levels of the mind of all kinds of impurities, dense energies of egoic tendencies, as well as rajas and tamas qualities.
5. Eliminates selfish tendencies:
The repetition of the mantra acts as a transformative tool, and by using it with intention, it eliminates (and gradually diminishes) the energy of selfish tendencies, negative emotional energy and passionate energy. Thus, all the tendencies end up becoming weaker and weaker.
In short, the constant repetition of a mantra is a multifaceted practice with profound implications for mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. It is a dynamic tool for remaining present, cultivating awareness of the Self (Self-awareness, that is, of the inner silence of Consciousness) and awareness of the self (body-mind-me instrument), purifying energy, heart and mind, eliminating selfish energies and fostering positive qualities that contribute to inner transformation and spiritual growth.
