Consistency (regularity) in practice
by Atman Nityananda / bkes

To achieve a radical change and transformation in our psychology and consciousness we have to practice with constancy and devotion.

When our practice is interrupted by short or long periods of non-practice we will not be able to increase its quantity and quality, nor will we be able to have a consistent advancement of inner development, i.e. to increase sattva and purity of mind, to develop the skills and virtues necessary to enter into the essence of spirituality which is to live in peace, love and harmony in conscious connection with our divine essence.

Instability indicates that our mind is not yet ready to follow spiritual life and practice and that it is still attracted to sensory experiences, successes and sense pleasures.

Being consistent in our practice depends on how high our motivation to practice is, the degree of our longing for truth and liberation, the results we have had so far, the spiritual experiences, how much we have overcome self-justifications, procrastination, laziness and ego resistance to practice, how much we work systematically to eliminate egoistic tendencies and how much the sattva quality has developed in our mind.

Regularity in practice is of utmost importance. Those who are not regular, who practice sporadically (every other time) cannot enjoy the results of their efforts. If you persist in your practice (sadhana) with steadfastness and diligence, if you are regular, systematic and punctual in your practice you will succeed. Those who meditate regularly soon attain Samadhi (state of supraconsciousness).
