Is awakening to discard what we are not?
by Atman Nityananda
Discarding what we are not (the body-mind-me identity) is not Awakening in itself, but a means to facilitate awakening.
Discarding what we are not involves discerning and realizing that we are not what we mistakenly believed ourselves to be (the layers of body, vital energy, mind, intellect, and ego), due to ignorance, attachment, projection, and identification.
This is a process of inquiry, observation, clear perception, and discernment, based on the knowledge we receive from enlightened beingsand spiritual texts about the nature of the Self (Consciousness) and the non-Self (the layers of body, vital energy, mind, intellect, and ego).
What Awakening is
Awakening is to realize our true Self –who we really are- beyond the layers of body, vital energy, mind, intellect, and ego. That is the realization that we are the silent peacful, blisful space of Consciousness.
Disidentification and a shift of identity
With awakening, a disidentification from the mind, the ego, and the body — the apparent or illusory self — occurs, which brings about a shift of identity.
After awakening, we no longer take ourselves to be the body–mind person, but rather the silent space of Consciousness itself.
Awakening is the realization of our true self, that is, the silent space of Consciousness and implies a disidentification from the mind the ego and the body (the apparent or illusory self)
