What is the difference between Self-awareness and Meditation?
by Atman Nityananda
First of all, we must clarify what is Self-awareness and what is meditation.
Meditation is the effortless and unwavering (constant) absorption of the mind in the peaceful inner silence of our divine essence.
Whereas Self-Awareness* is being aware of the inner silence without the mind being fully absorbed in it and also this contact with the inner silence is maintained by some kind of effort. For example, using a method such as the repetition of a mantra (Om Nama Shivay or Om Sri Jesus Christ Namaha) which implies some kind of effort, even through.may be very subtle.

According psychology Self-awareness is being aware and understanding the emotions, thoughts, impulses and in general all psychological expressions and tendencies, since they consider as ourselves the body-mind-me person.
However, our Identity or true Self is the silent presence of Consciousness. So, Self-awareness in its true meaning is being aware of this silence presence of Consciousness.
From the above we understand that meditation is also Self-awareness, but Self-awareness is not meditation. Only when Self-awareness becomes firm, deep and effortless it becomes meditation.
Meditation is also Self-awareness, but Self-awareness is not meditation. Only when Self-awareness becomes firm, deep and effortless it becomes or is meditation.
