Conceptual mind and Ego
by Atman Nityananda
The conceptual mind is not a problem in itself for us. It is a useful tool if we use it consciously.
Its function becomes problematic for us because is used by our ego or egoic self that wants through concepts to assert itself, compare itself with others or criticize others in order to feel better, superior or special, etc. due to its innate tendency to feel insecure, inferior, insufficient and unworthy.
The faculty of thinking and imagination are used by the ego to satisfy all kinds of its illusory desires and needs, mainly to satisfy its desires for pleasures through the senses, with sexual and food pleasures prevailing.
In short, the problem in our psyche is not the thinking mind but the ego which is primarily vital-emotional in nature and its main characteristics are lust, pride, insecurity (physical and psychological), idnetification with forms (primarily with the body and mental and emotional structures) and attachment to sensory forms, ideas, beliefs and psychological formations is general.
By being vigilant and centered in the inner silence we can avoid identification with egoic tendencies and diminish them (their energy field) with the power of prayer and mantra.
