Spiritual Awakening: Realizing the Conscious Silent Presence
by Atman Nityananda / Aum

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often forget the essence of our being. We identify ourselves with our physical body, our name, our profession, our relationships, and our possessions. We get so obsessed with sensory experiences and pleasures and, in general, with external reality that we never explore our inner world, which is the source of all our happiness, peace and wisdom.

However, there comes a moment in life when we are pushed to the brink of our limitations, and we realize that all our efforts to find fulfilment and happiness in sense pleasures and external things have failed. We feel lost, confused, and hopeless. We wonder, is this all there is to life? Is there something more, something deeper, that we have missed?

This is the moment of spiritual awakening, of the search for what is beyond sensory experiences, thoughts and emotions, pleasure and pain and bodily existence. This search and the need to free ourselves from limitations and ignorance motivates us to dedicate ourselves to spiritual life and practice and know the truth beyond changing phenomena.

Spiritual awakening is both a process of disentangling and freeing ourselves from illusions, attachments and identifications (with body and mind, ego and sense objects), desires and egoic tendencies, and also the realization of our true nature, the silent presence of our divine essence. It is a process of shedding our illusions and discovering the timeless consciousness, which is the source of all existence.

Spirituality and awakening is a process of self-discovery and a profound inner transformation that change the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us. This process free us from the limitations of mind and leads us to the realization that we are not just a body, but a conscious, silent presence that exists beyond the physical realm.

Most seekers of truth before awakening occurs (realization of our true Self), they usually go through a period of intense spiritual searching, reading books, listening to spiritual teachers, following disciplines and practicing in a systematic and diligent way. This quest and devotion to spiritual life and practice is rooted in our innate yearning for truth, in our deep inner urge to discover the ultimate meaning of life.

During this process awakening can occur at an unexpected moment. It is a moment when we realize that we are not a finite entity, but an infinite consciousness that is beyond birth and death and eternally present. It is a moment when we realize that we are not just a body called so and so, but a conscious and silent presence, which is the eternal witness of all experiences. It is a moment of profound clarity in which we see through the illusions of our ego and recognize the essence of our being.

Spiritual awakening is not an intellectual understanding but a direct experience of our true nature. It is an experiential intuitive awareness that we are not the mind, body, senses or emotions, but pure awareness, which is beyond all dualities and limitations.

This awakening happens spontaneously, in an unexpected moment, when the mind becomes still, and we are filled with a sense of deep inner peace and freedom. It is not something that can be achieved or attained through any effort or technique but is a natural outcome of our preparation, readiness and receptivity to the truth.

When we awaken to this truth, all our tension, our agony, and our impatience to find the truth will fade out, and we will relax into a deep sense of trust and surrender. We will realize that everything is happening for our ultimate good, and we need not resist what is happening in our life. Our experience in daily life will be completely different as we will see everything as a divine play, and our relationship with the world will be based on unity, love, harmony, compassion, and acceptance.

May we all awaken to this truth and live our lives in full awareness, peace, love, and joy.
